Are you ready to be alone for a little while? I’ve got a few hours and a few hundred thousand miles Now I’m pushing up the interstate the colors change The leaves in my yard are still green, they changed here like time passes faster where you are A hotbed there of social rest that’s why you told me I’d do better not to go And when I pulled in then I knew that I was coming home to you for the last time A one track mind up there they told me was a virtue But only thinking of myself, so obvious to hurt you And I landed in the ocean spray And they pulled me up into the light You’re all a little older than when I left And in the capsule I was killing time while on the surface time was killing you Up on the moon everything there is lighter, sometimes when I’m lucky so’s my mood But while I was just playing with TIE fighters you got sick of my stuff in the house So you got older and I didn’t Now that I noticed I’m embarrassed And when I get my shit together and pack my shit up And put my little spaceship into drive I know I will be leaving home and when I touch back down that it will not be mine

The voice from my mouth was unrecognizable It sounded out like I’d never heard before You on my feet pooled up there on the floor They stopped the show, ground everyone to a halt A room full of people and no-one did anything A room full of people, I barely did anything I’m sinking in

I check the seat for spiders I guess I’m neurotic like you And sometimes I flush twice for safety Yeah I’m neurotic too And the mushrooms went right through me But they made me relax Brought up thoughts of my old building And now there’s no going back I tied my shoes too tight just to feel something ‘Til my toes go blue and I learned That dipping in that well can make itself too hard to do When I’m in your sister’s guest room Waiting to fall asleep at a normal time All the trees are greener on the west side But over here is okay too In the morning I set the room Just like I was never there Except for my bag and sweatshirt Drying out on the chair I stood up and held my breath ‘Til the handmade blankets came to me The baleen upon the wall Singing me its lonely song It felt good to be forgotten Reflections in the table, glass under glass When you get her talking She will ask about me and that’s all

about

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Turquoise & Gold (2023).
Filmmaker Jack Hanton and I (Michael from The Madeleines) have talked about putting our talents together to make a multimedia art piece for a long time. We met as teenagers, and have been friends and fans of each other's art ever since. After years of wanting to collaborate but never quite working out how, the right project finally found us. Jack and his family gathered in the San Francisco Bay area in the Spring of 2022 to celebrate the life of his grandmother. He turned the experience- of mourning, of the little familial interactions that fall through the cracks between the big moments, of the way life simply goes on even when it grinds to a halt- into a tremendous documentary. This album is a product of our creative relationship. Jack and I would not have reached as high or done as much with our respective contributions without the other's support and encouragement.
Karen (from The Madeleines) and I performed some of these songs live in the Fall of 2022. Their feedback, support, and encouragement have been critical to the making of this record, and my continued artistry. My endless thanks.
